Tucked just inland, Wewurukannala Temple Garden feels part sacred site, part surreal dreamscape. A towering seated Buddha watches over a maze of murals, statues, and vivid scenes that blur the line between mythology and morality. It’s quiet, intense, and a little unexpected—the kind of place that lingers with you long after you leave. Note: One section depicts the Buddhist vision of hell with graphic imagery—best avoided for young children.

Tangalle is famous for its beautiful beaches. Goyambokka Beach and Silent Beach offer soft golden sands and inviting blue waters perfect for a relaxing day out. Whether you’re into sunbathing, swimming, or just strolling along the shore, these beaches provide the ideal backdrop for your beach day.

Just a short drive from Tangalle, the Mulkirigala Rock Temple is a must-visit. This ancient Buddhist temple, perched on a massive rock, features caves adorned with centuries-old frescoes and statues. The climb to the top is rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, making it well worth the effort.


Near Kudawella there’s Hummanaya Blowhole, one of those raw, no-frills natural shows. When the ocean’s in the mood, it fires water straight up through the rock, loud and a bit wild. It’s not constant, so you hang around, watch the sea breathe, wait for the moment.Then it hits, quick, powerful, gone again.

A quiet little bay, just far enough off the map to be mellow. Palm-lined and easygoing, made for slow, lazy beach days. Calm water for a relaxed dip, no rush, no fuss.

Hiri is a beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay that’s become a favorite for surfers and beach lovers. The gentle waves are perfect for beginners, while more experienced surfers can enjoy the bigger swells further out. The bay has a laid-back vibe with cool cafes and beach bars, making it a great place to relax and soak up the atmosphere.
Matara is a bustling coastal town rich in history and culture. Explore Matara Fort, built by the Dutch in the 17th century, and visit the iconic Parey Dewa (Paravi Duwa) Temple on a small island connected by a bridge. Don’t forget to check out the local markets for a taste of everyday life in Sri Lanka.
Polhena Beach, near Matara, is known for its calm, shallow waters and vibrant coral reefs. It’s an excellent spot for snorkeling and swimming. Keep an eye out for friendly sea turtles that frequent these waters. If you’re a surfer, head to Madiha Beach for some choice waves and if you’re a skateboarder, swing by the Yard Skatepark to skate with the locals.

A short drive from Matara, the Dondra Head Lighthouse is the tallest in Sri Lanka and marks the island’s southernmost point. Climb to the top for spectacular views of the Indian Ocean and the surrounding coastline. It’s a peaceful spot perfect for a leisurely stroll.
